Kids Day
Kids Day is this Wednesday. Remind your child to bring an extra t-shirt to school for after kids day, a labeled water bottle that they can refill, and a snack. This is a half day so students will leave at 11:30.

READING

This week, third grade readers will delve deeper into biographies. They will use what they have learned from reading fiction to make connections between events in someone’s life and understand the relationship between cause and effect. They will realize that things that happened earlier in a person’s life will influence the decisions he or she will make later. At the same time, as they read about different people, they will ask questions and use synthesizing techniques in order to understand what achievements and qualities made these persons’ lives important enough to be written about.

Throughout the week, they will also work on consolidating their understanding by writing long about what they read. They will reflect on what a particular person did to become noteworthy, what life lessons we learn from them and how we can apply that to our own lives.

WRITING
This week, as we continue to learn about persuasive writing, students will make sure they are using their most convincing evidence to support their ideas. They will think about what makes a powerful speech, and review the words they have chosen to ensure they sound right and evoke the intended emotion.

MATH

This week our mathematicians will apply their problem solving strategies to finding solutions to two-step word problems involving combinations of the four operations (multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction).

As they explore the patterns that occur throughout multiplication and division, students will continue to learn strategies and identify different arithmetic patterns to assist them with problem-solving. They will also spend one day focusing their attention on the properties of units 1 and 0 using pictorial representations to build their understanding.

SCIENCE

This week Soil Scientist are gathering their data and reviewing their findings to draw conclusions about soil investigations. With their science group, they will put all their findings together to make a final statement about the best soil for the soccer field or herb garden.
