Reminders for the Week

Just a reminder that there are no after school activities this week.

This Tuesday, December 19th, will follow a Thursday schedule. Specials for that day are:
3C - P.E. and Drama
3D - P.E.
3H - Art
3W - Music

As part of our celebration, on Thursday, December 21st there will be a House Event. Please wear you House T-shirt.

As we are planning for the last day of school which includes a house event, winter parties and culminating in a winter assembly at the end of the day, we hope you will all be here to join in the fun! If you can’t, we would appreciate knowing if you are planning to take your child/ren away at an earlier date. Please inform your classroom teacher.

We will continue to collect toy and clothing items for the Pass the Parcel event this Thursday.

READING

This week, third grade readers will conclude their study of narrative nonfiction. They will review what they have learned so far and will reflect on lessons learned. They will make connections to their own lives and will understand that the true stories we have read serve as personal inspiration to be braver, stronger and more determined people. They will ask themselves, “How will I live differently knowing that this happened in my world?” and also practice writing about reading. We will end the unit with a reading celebration that will give the students the opportunity to share with one another and to talk about their favorite true stories.

WRITING

It's the final week of our Persuasive unit and we are working in groups to develop individual persuasive pieces. Group brainstormed together reasons and evidence based on a cause they are passionate about. They will check in with their group to share and develop ideas. This week, on Sunday, we have our Persuasive On Demand writing sample. this is a time for students to show all they have learned during the unit.

MATH

This week, our mathematicians will continue their investigation of area and work towards understanding how to find the area of rectangles through the multiplication of side lengths.

Students will continue tiling using unit squares to form rectangles and determine their area. With this knowledge, students will begin to find the area of incomplete arrays. They will visualize and predict what the finished array will look like, then complete the array by joining opposite end points using a straight-edge, and determining the total area.

They will also be given information about the side lengths of an area model. Based on that information, they will use a straight-edge ruler to draw a grid of equal sized squares within the area model, then skip-count to find the total number of squares. We have mainly been using square centimeters and square inches for units of area, and will now students will be introduced to square feet and square meters as units of area.

SCIENCE

In science this week, students start investigating how light can be manipulated. They will look at how light travels and moves. Students will then discover what happens when light strikes different surfaces. Some key vocabulary include; reflect, absorb, transmit, transparent, translucent, opaque.

This week we will also introduce the unit group project. Students will use all they have learned about light and sound to produce a video that displays light and sound effects in a story. When we return from Winter Break, student will continue to work on the project in class.
