Week of February 4th, 2017 -18

Reminders for the Week

Family Math Night
Mark your calendars for Feb. 7, 4:15 pm to 5:15 pm. Come play math games with your child.
Games develop fluency with math skills and problem solving. Experience the fun of learning
through games! Our Family Math Night games are intended to help build fluency in math in
a fun and engaging way. You’ll find the rules and instructions for a wide range of math skills
games using a variety of different resources, including playing cards and dice. We’ve
assembled games for different skill levels ranging from Grades Pre-K through 5, all
with an educational math twist.

Did you know? The games are available to be checked out from the library after Family Math
Night, if you would like to play them again at home. Ask your child to talk with the librarians.

Locations: Grades 1-5 are in the ES Hall, KG in the Drama room and Pre K in their own room.

Family Picnic
Due to popular demand, we will be having another BBQ for picnic day next Thursday,
February 8. Kindly sign up through the google form (below) if interested! There is a google
sign-up form for each grade. For siblings, please sign up each child in their respective
grade order form.

The DEADLINE for orders will be on Tuesday, February 6th by 5:00 p.m.
We kindly ask that parents drop off the money in a labelled envelope to the ES office
(name, class code and order). Note the following grade level lunch times:
  • Pre-K will eat lunch at 11am,
  • KG to Grade 2 at 12:10pm and
  • Grades 3-5 at 12:30pm

IMPORTANT: Unfortunately we will not be able to take orders on the day of the BBQ and
we will have to cancel orders that have not been paid by Tuesday the 6th.

We look forward to seeing you all!!

READING

This week in Reading, third grade readers will continue to add on new reading skills that will help them better understand a story and its characters. Readers will consider the role the illustrations play in a story, what additional meanings and understandings pictures add to the text. They will also investigate the author’s choice to not include illustrations, yet still being able to  paint pictures using words only.

As readers in the third grade continue to follow their characters along the story mountain, they will spend some time pondering over the climax and the building tension before the character makes a decision to solve his/her troubles. Readers will have to pay attention to how the main character is tested, notice how he/she reacts, and think ‘Why might this be important to the character’s journey?’ They will consider questions such as ‘What strength does the character draw on?’ and ‘How does the character change?’ before concluding on the life lessons both characters and readers can all learn.

At the same time, readers will continue to meet in book clubs and will draw upon their knowledge of story structure to guide conversation, grow ideas, consider different perspectives and ultimately get the most of their reading experience.

WRITING

The start of the week students will be revising and editing their second adapted fairytale, improving it by using language to paint a picture in the readers mind. This will be one of their options they could choose when publishing a fairytale near the end of the unit.

Later in the week Third Grade students will start planning and practicing their very own fairy tale. Practicing storytelling their stories helps them work out sequencing and details that need to be added. They will use everything they learned in their prior two experiences of writing fairy tales to help them start on their way. They will learn that one way writers improve their writing is to add descriptive language to their story. They do this by adding details to describe the character, setting and objects as they write.

MATH

This week our third grade mathematicians will begin a new unit focusing on fractions as numbers on a number line. For many of our learners, this will be their first foray into working with fractions.

Learners will spend the first half of the week using concrete models to gain hands-on experience partitioning a whole into equal parts. For example, students will be provided with paper strips that they will measure to find the total length and then divide the strip into equal parts (halves, fourths, eighths as well as thirds and sixths).

Towards the end of the school week, mathematicians will move towards defining unit fractions of a whole numerically using fractional notation. For example, students will see a whole figure divided into four equal parts with one of the parts shaded, and then determine that 1 out of 4 equal parts are shaded, or 1/4 of the figure is shaded.

Key unit vocabulary at the start of this unit includes:

-equal parts

-unit fraction: a fraction with a numerator of one and positive integer for the denominator, 1/n. Example: 1/4

-unit form: fractions expressed using numbers as words. Example: 1 fourth

-fraction form: a selected part of a whole that has been divided into equal parts, expressed using numbers in which the denominator (number on the bottom) shows the total number of equal parts and the numerator (number on the top) represents the indicated number of parts. Example: 2/4

-halves
-thirds
-fourths
-sixths
-eighths

SCIENCE

This week we start our new Social Studies unit, 'Shaping Communities Around the World'. Our essential question is 'How does culture shape communities around the world?'
During this unit we investigate different countries and their culture. Culture including; 1. Art, music and Dance 2. Folk tales, Myths and Legends 3. Leisure activities 4. Historical events 5. Inventions, creation, innovation 6. Key people/person. During this weeks lesson we introduce the students to the 'Big 6' research.

To help launch the unit, we are asking parents this week to share your expertise about any country of the world that interests you. The categories mentioned above will help guide you in what brief amounts of information we are looking for.

Please return this no later than Thursday, February 16.
