READING
This week, we are kicking off our new reading unit, Following Characters Across Series. As students start to read series books, they get to know the characters and will want to continue reading books to find out what will happen to their newfound friends. Students will start to identify patterns in books and series with characters, settings and plot lines.
Book Clubs will continue in this unit. As part of a book club member, students will agree upon a set amount of pages to read before each meeting. It is important that they not only complete the reading, but also that they do not read beyond the agreed upon amount. Book Club members will also come prepared to Book Club meetings with a talking point from their book to discuss. This should be something from the story that they had a strong reaction to and find important to share with the other members.
Because students will be reading a limited portion each week from their book club book, they will still be responsible for continuing their daily practice with a book of their choice. Therefore they will carry two reading books with them to read, the priority being their Book Club book to meet their weekly deadlines.
WRITING
As Persuasive writers are are adding the finishing touches to their second piece, they will reflect on the goals they have set for themselves as writers. They will use checklists and charts to determine where they are meeting their goals and what they should work on next. At the end of the week, writers will begin a third persuasive piece, where they will change the world through the use of their words. This work will be collaborative and will also involve research to become more informed about their topic.

MATH
This week our mathematicians will continue building fractions that are greater than one whole and begin comparing unit fractions using different sized representations. Through real-world examples students will begin to see that the size of the whole must be considered when comparing the size of a fraction.
Students will begin to explore how a fractional part can change depending on how a whole is defined. For example, a cake in two pans might be considered 2 wholes or 1 whole. How we define the whole will change how we talk about the size of the fractional parts.
In the middle of the week, our mathematicians will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of fractions on the mid-module assessment. Please encourage your learner to review their problem sets and homework to be prepared and feel confident.
Key vocabulary:
-greater than ( > )
-less than ( < )
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week in Social Studies each class continues their research into their class country. We will be looking more closely at different sources to find information, in particular the 'Visual Tab' in the online elementary library website. We will also be looking at and practice citing the sources we have used. We include; title, author, publishing company and date and URL link.
Later in the week students will be grouped into the project groups and then will chose a country from the options available. The practice from the class research will help them to create research questions for their own country. All the way through this unit we are using the 'Big 6' model. Refer below.

Lost and Found
Part of educating students at CAC is encouraging independence through increasing responsible behaviors. We constantly encourage students to label their items so that they are easily identified and returned back to the owner. It is also important that students know what to do when they lose any of their items.
Here is what we advise students to do when they report a lost item:
1- Look everywhere (lost & found table/class/playground/inside backpacks/home ,etc,...)
2- Ask Others (friends/teachers/parents/siblings,etc,..)
3-Ask parents to report to the lost and found link. Upper grade students can do this too.
4- Use the same link to report when item is found.
In order to support our students and community members with the above process, we created the below Lost and Found link to help us track of lost and found items.
