READING
WRITING
Students will start the week off looking at ways to revise their poetry. They will revise their work checking to see that each of their poems contain at least one of the ‘three Pillars’ of Poetry. They will learn to use a thesaurus to find exact words that fit into place in their poetry. The will also look for ways to add the poetry tools of line breaks, repetition, and white space to their work so it will have a greater impact on the reader. Students will work on revision throughout the week and then start to publish at the end of the week, as we are in the last week of this poetry unit.

READING
This week, mystery readers will continue their reading investigations by taking a closer look at the secondary characters. They will analyze how these characters help the main detective and what their role is in the story. They will take notes on their thinking and come prepared to share their ideas in partnership discussions. Just as detectives often solve a mystery with the help and intelligence of their friends, mystery readers, too, ponder about books with other mystery readers, an opportunity to practice the language of prediction, wondering and questioning. They will also look at and analyze the choices the characters make and reflect on the lessons we can learn from these choices.

MATH
This week our mathematicians will be completing Module 2 and taking their End of Module Assessment. Prior to the assessment at the end of the week, students will continue to estimate sums by rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds, and practice solving mixed word problems involving multiple steps and operations.
You can help your child by having them focus on reading word problems out loud to find out what information is known, what they are solving for, and what operations they can perform to solve the problem. On the homework, please ensure that your mathematician reviews their problem set and that they’re consistently using the Read, Draw, Write method to solve problems. Mathematicians are expected to show their work by including a diagram or equation and a full sentence response to the problem.
This week, third grade students are introduced to the unit project they will work on over the next few weeks. Students will be asked to choose two countries they know well, to use for their project. They can choose places where they have lived or traveled to, so they can add some of personal experiences. Students will read maps to compare the two locations. They will then create a presentation that describes the two locations and the cultural characteristics (food, clothing, shelter, use of the environment) using the information they learned from reading the maps. They will create a Screencast recording where they are showing and describing the findings that answer our essential questions 'How does WHERE this location affect HOW you live?'
