Week of June 4th, 2016-17

Reminders for this Week
Student Leadership announces that CAC students have reached their talon ticket goal and will have a fun Dress Alike day tomorrow, Monday! It is not mandatory and intended to be fun. We are encouraging creativity by asking that students use clothing that they already own. We are also encouraging students to include everyone who is interested in participating.

Thanks for your support of our CAC Student Leaders.

Report cards and returning books
We would like to finish the year on a positive note and need your help with this. Reports are not issued for students who have not returned all books/library materials. You have this weekend to look under sofas, beds, home bookshelves, in-between seats, anywhere and everywhere! Please make sure they are returned by Sunday. Sometimes books cannot be found. An invoice will be issued and needs to be paid to get the report card. We will be calling families as we want to make sure everyone has a great end of the year and can receive reports.

End-of-Year Celebrations: During the day, they will rotate through Maker Space activities, Commando Water fun in the pool, a movie, and a grade-level party at lunch time.

We are sensitive to the fact that Ramadan begins on May 27. If any students will be fasting, please have them tell their teacher, so we can make arrangements for a space with activities but no food during the lunch times.

  • June 4 - We will have a whole school farewell for the 5th graders from 7:55-8:15. Grade 5 will have their celebration at the Marriott. Grades 1 and 3 will have their celebration day at school. Food has already been paid by parents (2 slices pizza, juice box, popcorn and cupcake).
    • PreK, KG, Grade 2 and Grade 4 will be in their homerooms, and will need to bring a packed lunch from home to eat on the front lawn. The cafeteria will not be available during lunch time.

  • June 5 - PreK, KG, Grades 2 and 4 will have their celebration day. Food has already been paid by parents (2 slices pizza, juice box, popcorn and cupcake).
    • Grades 1, 3 & 5 will be in their homerooms and will need to bring a picnic lunch from home. The cafeteria will not be available during lunch time.
  • June 6 - Whole school end-of-year assembly 10:30am.

We would like to thank everyone for a fun year of learning. We hope you have a relaxing summer spent with family and friends.

We encourage students to keep their minds active during the summer. This can involve many different ideas. The experiences that children have during vacation when traveling and seeing new things is definitely one. If you are traveling this summer please take to opportunity to talk with your child about the places you visit. Discuss the historical, cultural and political aspects of your destination.

Keeping a diary of all the exciting events they see and take part in will help to maintain and develop their literacy skills. This will also help give them ideas in the new school year. Encourage them to describe in detail so they 'paint a picture' in the readers mind.

Reading every day is a great habit to help your child build. Educators and researchers have long recognized what has come to be known as the “summer slide,” the loss of learning that can take place during the summer months if students do not engage in educational activities. Click this link for an article that tells ways to prevent the summer slide.

Check out the online resources the library has that are located on the CAC website. In addition to reading resources they have social studies and science websites such as brainpopjr.  The websites below will give you additional access to online books and reading resources. https://www.tumblebooks.com/

Third graders can also practice math through various activities.  We do encourage them to continue to practice their basic math facts each day for a few minutes. Our students are familiar with Mathletics for on line practice. Another website to visit is Khan Academy. Khan Academy has learning videos and activities that students can visit to refresh their math skills or learn new ones. Students can use their school email to log on and get a student account.

We created this packet from Eureka Math activities: summer math fun pdf for fluency practice. This Getting Ready for Grade 4 (use you CAC email to access it) packet has activities to keep your child engaged and ready for the next year.

Please remember that summer vacation is also a time for the kids to relax and recharge. Enjoy your time with them and have a fantastic summer vacation.

Your Third Teachers
